Malerkotla, May 25

The usual fervour around Eid-ul-Fitr was missing on Monday as residents of the Muslim-majority Malerkotla town preferred to gather in small numbers to exchanged greetings in view of the Covid pandemic.

Idgah and mosque remained closed, while residents offered namaz in small groups in streets maintaining social distancing, praying for the end of the pandemic. The youth greeted their loved ones on WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter.

Shakeel Khan, a senior citizen who was buying fruits near Sirhandi gate here, said: "It's for the first time that I have not distributed sweets and met my friends on Eid."

Markets were deserted. Shopkeepers said sales were yet to pick up post lockdown. "It will take time to attain the pre-lockdown level of sales," one of them said.

"Many wanted to buy clothes, fruits and other items, but couldn't because they are short of money," said Abdul, a local resident.

Iqbal Mohammad Fauji, former president of the Nagar Council, was content that people followed the Covid guidelines on Eid. "Malerkotla residents have once again proved that they are willing to sacrifice anything to save the country. All followed the guidelines of the state government to defeat Covid," he said.

Ertiqaul Hasan, Mufti Azam Punjab, told The Tribune that not only Malerkotla, but Muslims across the country were standing by the state government to defeat the virus.

"Though its unprecedented situation for all Muslims as there is no celebration of Eid, but all are feeling proud as they have supported their government to arrest the spread of Covid," he added.
