Chandigarh, July 3

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed "necessary action" by the authorities concerned, while disposing of a PIL seeking steps against the banned organisation, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ).

At the onset, the State of Punjab told the High Court that as many as 16 FIRs had been registered against the organisation. Besides, 116 WhatsApp groups relating to the organisation had been blocked. "All necessary measures are being taken by the state to prevent any kind of anti-national activities being undertaken by the organisation, including blocking the proposed referendum being taken by the organisation," the state told the Bench of Chief Justice Rajiv Shanker Jha and Justice Arun Palli.

The Bench was hearing a petition filed by advocate Birkramjit Singh Bajwa for steps against the organisation, which had "suddenly become very active furthering the cause of separate state for Sikhs". The petitioner submitted the organisation was going ahead with all kind of anti-national activities and provoking residents, especially the Sikh youth, to declare a war against the present Punjab Government.

Punjab Additional Advocate-General PS Bajwa added SFJ head Gurpatwant Singh Pannu had been declared a designated terrorist by the Government of India. — TNS
