Several streets, main roads, markets and almost all state and Central Government offices were waterlogged as rain lashed the district from 6 am to 9 am while intermittent showers continued for another two hours.

Locals had to bear power cuts from around 7 am till 3 pm. Normal life was affected as people were forced to stay home. As water entered hundreds of houses and commercial complexes, several goods were damaged. A resident in Krishna Nagari, Raghav Nagpal, said for the first time, rainwater had entered his home that was at 2-ft higher than the street level. Nanak Nagari, Gobind Nagari, Anand Nagari, Indira Nagari, Idgah Basti, Arya Nagar, Thakur Abadi and Jain Nagari were among the most-affected localities.

The subdivisional administrative complex, office of the Superintendent of Police, City police stations, fire brigade office and Civil Hospital were also inundated. In some offices, old records were also damaged.

The fresh rainfall has increased the worries of farmers in Muktsar district, who had suffered huge losses due to rain last month.

The Agriculture Department officials said special girdawari was underway, but as per the preliminiary report, nearly 8,500 acres were affected. “There is no fresh loss due to today’s rain, but the last month’s rainfall had caused loss to crops in nearly 8,500 acres. The farmers in some villages have sown paddy crop. However, nearly 4,000 acres are still unsown,” said Jalour Singh, Chief Agriculture Officer, Muktsar.

Some farmers said there was forecast of more rain in the next 24-48 hours. “We are worried about waterlogging. The administration has not made any arrangements in this regard yet,” a farmer said.

Some roads were also inundated in the town today.
