Built to provide health services to 85 villages, the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Kauhrian, has been devoid of basic amenities for a long time. The emergency services are also closed. The outbreak of Covid-19 has failed to bring any improvement at the centre.

Presently, it functions from 8 am to 4 pm, but the dilapidated buildings of the hospital and residential quarters pose a danger to the lives of employees and patients.

"Before elections, the leaders had promised to reconstruct the building and post adequate number of employees here. However, nothing has been done yet. Residents are blaming us for the unfulfilled promises," said Gurpreet Singh, Kauhrian sarpanch and a Congress leader.

Gurmeet Singh, another resident, alleged the PHC failed to provide medical aid even to locals with minor health problems.

"There is no proper repair or cleaning. Snakes have also been spotted here, but despite complaints, there has been no action," said an employee.

As per information, of the six posts of medical officer, only one has been filled. Similarly, many posts of other staff like nurse and Class IV employees, have also been lying vacant.

"I had raised the issue in the Assembly and the government had assured us of posting more doctors at the PHC. We will launch a protest soon," said AAP Dirba MLA and Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema.

Senior Medical Officer, PHC, Dr Tejinder Singh said he had been writing to the authorities repeatedly and hopefully, things would improve.

"On the directions of the senior authorities, a team visited the PHC recently. The shortage of staff and other facilities are in the knowledge of the higher authorities and they have promised to look into the matter," he said.
