When Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh recently said the Punjabis' attitude of koi gal nahin was making people delay testing for Covid-19, he was not off the mark. It is perhaps this attitude which is behind the breach of quarantine norms.

In places like Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala and Amritsar, there have been numerous cases of either patients breaching the home quarantine once their symptoms wane, or their family members/direct contacts not following the guidelines. It is perhaps one of the major reasons that the disease is spreading fast in the state, with 10,585 cases reported in just a week.

Presently, over 6,000 patients in the state are under home isolation. However, with economic interests overtaking the concern for public safety, people have now started breaching the norms. Dr Rajiv Bhaskar, Punjab's nodal Officer for Covid-19, said this was one of the main reasons for the increase in cases in urban areas.

The authorities have found 464 violations of home isolation till last evening. "The number is far lower than actual violations because people leave their phones behind," said a senior officer.

Health officials say they are looking at ways to stop violations by imposing fines.

Amit Kumar, Special Secretary, Health, said rapid action teams were visiting those under quarantine to counsel them. "Three visits in 10 days are being made, besides regular tele-monitoring of patients," he said.
