In a major crackdown, the Tarn Taran police today confiscated a huge quantity of 'lahan' from the Mand area near Marar village in Harike. During the operation, the police used drones equipped with highly sophisticated cameras.

Senior Superintendent of Police Dhruman H Nimbale said 1.02 lakh litre of 'lahan' was seized during the operation. He said the area was notorious for illegal manufacturing of liquor.

During the crackdown, the police also recovered five boats from the spot.

The SSP said based on inputs obtained through drone cameras, over 125 police personnel, in close coordination with the Excise Department and Forest Department of Punjab, conducted the raids in the Mand area early this morning.

He said the area had a marshy terrain and was not accessible due to tall elephant grass. Hence, drones mounted with cameras were used.

The footage of the drone cameras was shown to residents of nearby villages to identify the suspects involved in the trade.

When the accused saw the police raiding teams, they dumped a huge amount of 'lahan' in the Sutlej, said the SSP, adding the accused would also be booked under the Water (Prevention amp; Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.
