Ropar: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) has been sent to Police Lines after a video of him thrashing a shopkeer went viral on social media. Vishnu Bhatnagar, general secretary, District Sweets Shop Owners Union, said ASI Balwant Singh entered his shop along with other cops and started hitting his brother with a cane. The eyewitnesses said earlier the police personnel had thrashed several vendors near the Civil Hospital. DSP Talwinder Singh said the ASI has been sent to Police Lines. TNS
Customs Dept seizes 1-kg gold at Amritsar airport
Amritsar: The Customs Department has confiscated one-kg gold after checking a flight at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport here. According to information, the flight arrived from Dubai at 3.15 pm. During the routine checking, a gold bar weighing one kg, valued at Rs 51 lakh, was found underneath a seat. Customs' Commissioner AS Ranga said the gold bar was covered with a black adhesive tape sticking to the bottom of an unoccupied seat of the plane. The recovered gold has been seized under the Customs Act. TNS
IIT-Ropar ranked 2nd best institute in country
Ropar: Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar, (IIT-Ropar) has been ranked second in the country after the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 announced on Wednesday. The IIT-Ropar has been ranked in the scale of 351 to 400. Sarit K Das, Director, IIT-Ropar, said, "The force behind the success of IIT-Ropar is its state-of-the-art infrastructure, world-class research and highly qualified faculty." TNS
