The BKU Lakhowal has said farmers would be forced to burn stubble if the government failed to either give a bonus of

Rs 100 per quintal on paddy crop or a compensation of Rs 2,500 per acre.

Talking to mediapersons here today, BKU general secretary Harinder Singh Lakhowal said the apex court had issued directions to the government last year that since farmers were not in a position to bear the additional cost of straw management, the government ought to lend financial assistance to them if it wanted that stubble burning should stop.

He said even last year a large number of farmers had taken upon themselves the task of straw management on the assurance of financial support by the government, but very few farmers had been given the promised grants while others were still waiting for funds.

"Not only this, those farmers who followed the government instructions of direct sowing of next crop without stubble burning had to incur extra expenditure on pesticides and farm chemicals to deal with attack of rats and pests and had to put in larger quantity of fertilisers also. The only way to stop stubble burning is to provide assured financial assistance in the form of bonus on crop or lump sum grants on the basis of land holding," Lakhowal said.

On the rail roko agitation, the BKU leader said the farmers were geared up to intensify the agitation from October 1 and their protest would continue till the state government adopts a resolution in the state Assembly against the farm Acts and the Centre scraps these laws.
