Bathinda, September 17

Guest lecturers working in constituent colleges and neighbourhood campuses of Punjabi University, Patiala, have not received their salary for more than a year.

As a result, lecturers had been forced to borrow money from relatives and friends to feed their family. Things got worse in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak.

There are 130 guest lecturers in 13 constituent colleges in Malwa, five neighbourhood campuses (Mansa, Sangrur and Bathinda) and two regional centres (Mohali and Bathinda) who draw a monthly salary of Rs 21,600.

Jaspal Singh, chief, Punjabi University Guest Teachers' Association, said, "Some guest faculty lecturers have received salary from January to April, but majority of the lecturers have not received it since July 2019. With no financial resources or savings left, they are finding it extremely difficult to make both ends meet."

Guest lecturers are hired in July and then relieved temporarily in November before being recruited again in February till April.

The matter was highlighted by The Tribune, but nothing concrete has been done by the authorities concerned.

Punjabi University's Vice-Chancellor BS Ghuman and Dean Academic Affairs Gurdeep Singh Batra could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
