Batala, September 17

In what is being termed as a breakthrough in breaking the nexus between Indian smugglers and their Pakistan accomplices, the Batala police today confiscated 6.57-kg pure grade heroin from fields across the wire fencing.

Reportedly, the contraband’s value is around Rs 32 crore. The magnitude of the seizure was such that IG (Border Range) Surinder Pal Singh Parmar rushed from Amritsar to Batala to divulge the details.

Sources said the police had been working on tip-offs for the past month on an international drug cartel operating near the border but somehow, they failed to make much headway.

Acting on one such tip-off late yesterday evening, the cops set up a ‘naka’ at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk in Fatehgarh Churian and questioned three persons, namely Sarabjit Singh, Jagtar Singh and Surjit Singh. Around 157-gm heroin was recovered from a place identified by them. A case under the NDPS Act was registered against the suspects, who were arrested.

Later, after intense questioning, they told the police that more contraband was hidden in the agricultural fields across the wire fencing.

“We had no clue that such a place could be used to smuggle in drugs from Pakistan. The accused are a part of a larger syndicate operating near the border,” said an officer. — TNS
