Chandigarh, October 9

In an attempt to further streamline the functioning of the subordinate judiciary in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has asked all District and Sessions Judges to allow the filing of non-urgent cases as well.

High Court Registrar-General Sanjiv Berry made it clear that this would be in addition to the other categories of cases already allowed to be filed. The Sessions Judges were also asked to depute sufficient number of judicial officers on each working day so that cases could be taken up for hearing in an effective manner. "This, of course, should be subject to the prevailing local conditions, including the intensity of the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic," the order said.

The High Court has already directed the District and Sessions Judges to increase the categories of cases taken up for physical hearing, subject to consent by counsel appearing for all parties to the litigation.

The order comes at a time when the courts are making attempts to prevent the pandemic period turn into a denial of justice phase. In district courts across Punjab, 77,246 cases were disposed of out of 1,89,056 cases filed. In Haryana, 70,439 cases were disposed of out of 1,87,344 cases filed in the district courts. No less than 2,434 cases were disposed of in the UT district court out of the 7,418 cases filed during the period.
