Faridkot, October 28

An assistant jail superintendent at the Central Jail, Faridkot, was arrested today for allegedly receiving Rs 15,000 as bribe from an inmate to allow him keep a mobile phone. The development has raised questions over the functioning of the jail authorities where 12-15 mobile phones are recovered from prisoners every month.

After an accused in a murder case was caught red-handed talking on the phone by Harbans Singh, assistant jail superintendent, the latter allegedly agreed to ignore the crime for Rs 15,000. However, the officer himself was caught red-handed by Vigilance Bureau sleuths when he was receiving the money from the inmate's uncle at a dhaba situated outside the jail.

The seizure of mobile phones from inmates at the Faridkot jail is going on unabated for the past two years. The police and jail authorities claimed to have started investigations to look into the details of calls made from the seized phones but these inquiries have remained inconclusive.
