SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal and its executive members faced the ire of Sikh activists when the former attended a programme organised in the remembrance of Gen AS Vaidya's assassins Harjinder Singh Jinda and Sukhdev Singh Sukha at Gurdwara Jhanda Bunga on the Golden Temple premises today.

A verbal duel ensued between the two sides when Sikh activist Narain Singh Chaura stood up after spotting Longowal among devotees.

Terming it a violation of the Akal Takht's directions, Chaura said, "The Akal Takht has pronounced 'tankhah' (religious punishment) upon the SGPC executive headed by Longowal. He should honour the Akal Takht directions and not attend the 'Panthic' programme organised to commemorate the Sikh 'martyrs' today. Let the Akal Takht decide if this was a violation," he said.

On the other hand, Longowal argued that the religious sentence had barred the SGPC executive from 'addressing' a gathering for a month, but never banned 'participation' in it.

"The ban is on conducting a public address. There is no bar on our participation in any programme like a common devotee. The issue is unnecessarily being twisted by several Sikh activists. We have filed a complaint with the Akal Takht," he said. The issue has now reached the Akal Takht, which will take a final call.

Meanwhile, as an atonement of 'saroops' getting destroyed in a fire incident in 2016, SGPC executive members, including president Gobind Singh Longowal, today completed the three-day service of sweeping the Heritage Street leading to the Golden Temple.
