More needs to be done: SAD

Chandigarh, October 20

The SAD today said the Congress government had taken up the farm Bills after farmers' ultimatum but a lot more was needed to be done to secure the future of state farmers, even as it announced its legislators were ready to resign en mass to ensure the Centre gave them their due.

"The fight to secure justice for the 'kisan', 'khet mazdoor' and arhtiyas as well as three crore Punjabis has just started. Now Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh must give a categorical assurance that the state government would purchase all crops, including wheat, paddy, cotton and maize at the MSP, if the Centre defaults on the same," SAD legislature party leader Sharanjit Singh Dhillon and Bikram Singh Majithia said.

"The truth is that our farmer brothers made CM Capt Amarinder Singh relent from his recent statement at Khatkar Kalan where he asserted that there was no point in calling a session to negate the Central laws," they said.

Majithia said it was unfortunate that the government did not share the proposed Bills with all the stakeholders, including farmers and legislators, before the House was convened. The SAD said the CM had thrown the ball in the Centre's court by passing Bills concerning trade and commerce which were in the concurrent list and required the Presidential assent.

Majithia said it was baffling why the government refused to take a firm stand to protect APMC markets by repealing the related Acts. — TNS
