The police today arrested a man who allegedly duped a Nangal resident of Rs 5.5 lakh on the pretext of purchasing red mercury from him.

SSP Akhil Chaudhary said red mercury did not exist in reality but rumours were spread that it was found in old transistors and could be used to cure Covid or as a nuclear material. Tricksters floating several companies lured people promising them that they would visit the seller and assess the genuineness of the product, and if the product was found to be authentic, they would pay a heavy price for it. But they charged fees for visiting the seller, he added.

One such company Jupiter Antiquarian Pvt Ltd posted on the social media inquiring about the sellers of red mercury. Mukesh Kumar of Nangal contacted it for selling the product. A man visited him and checked an old transistor. He took Rs 5.5 lakh from Mukesh and fled the spot. The police set up nakas and intercepted Amit Kumar of Uttar Pradesh. A case under Sections 406 and 120B of IPC had been filed against him and another person. — TNS
