Chandigarh, November 8

As the Centre has extended the restrictions on the movement of goods trains in Punjab till November 12 despite the state government claiming that all tracks had been cleared, the Punjab Congress leaders have accused the BJP of pushing the state towards a confrontation with the agitating farmers.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Sunil Jakhar said the designs of the BJP were clear. "It is trying to build a confrontation between the peacefully agitating farmers and the Congress government and punishing the state for raising its voice against the Central farm laws," he said. "Everyone can see through the designs of the BJP. It is misusing its powers and wants to kill the spirit of federalism," Jakhar said.

A senior government official said as on Sunday, the status quo stays. The Railways has refused to run trains despite all 21 locations of farmer agitations on rail tracks and platforms having been cleared after deliberations between a five-member Cabinet committee and farmer groups. "Back door parleys are on to convince farmers to allow running of passengers trains. But tomorrow, the Centre may ask farmers to vacate malls and petrol stations," said a senior political functionary. — TNS
