A municipal councillor of the Congress, identified as Sandeep Kumar, alias Rinka, was booked by the local police on the charge of abetment of suicide after Ram Lal Sharma, a resident of New Jawahar Nagar here, ended his life by consuming a poisonous substance.

A suicide note was found from Sharma's shop where he ended his life, in which he accused Rinka and several others of forcing him to take the extreme step. The deceased alleged that Rinka was pressurising him to vacate a shop which he had taken on rent around a decade ago.

Parveen Kumar, Sadar police station SHO, said a case under Section 306 of the IPC had been registered against Rinka, along with a woman area president, identified as Mehak, Anuj Sharma, and Bobby, among seven persons.

No arrests have been made so far as Rinka and all other suspects have gone underground, police authorities said. The body of the deceased was handed over to his family after a post-mortem examination. Earlier, the family members had alleged that the police were sheltering the accused and pressurising them to omit the names of the suspects. However, the charge was refuted by the police authorities, adding that prompt action was taken and a case was registered against the accused.
