High load of diabetics among patients worries Punjab Health Department

When the state is heading towards a second wave of Covid, its biggest worry is the high number diabetic and hypertensive patients. In the country, the state has the highest load of patients suffering from diabetes and hypertension.

Among the 4,389 persons who died of Covid in the state, 91 per cent were suffering from co-morbidities. At present, at 3.14 per cent, the state has the

highest case fatality rate.

The situation has emerged as a big concern for the Health Department. The department has started a campaign to minimise the use of trans fats, which cause these diseases. As per a note prepared by the department, Punjab has a high prevalence of hypertension. The unadjusted prevalence of hypertension in Punjab is 35.7 per cent (men 41 per cent, women 25.4 per cent) against the prevalence in India at 25.3 per cent. Also, the state is having the highest prevalence of high systolic blood pressure, high total cholesterol, and high fasting plasma glucose.

The Central expert team on Covid had also expressed concern over the heavy load of patients suffering from hypertension and diabetes.

Meanwhile, the state witnessed a spike in cases as 703 persons tested positive and 31 died of Covid in the past 24 hours. As per the media bulletin, with the fresh cases, the total number of cases has reached 1,39,184 and number of deaths has reached 4,389. In the district-wise breakup of cases, SAS Nagar topped the list with 119 cases, followed by Ludhiana (103), Jalandhar (100), Patiala (69) and Bathinda (68). In district-wise breakup of deaths, SAS Nagar and Patiala reported four deaths each, followed by Kapurthala, Ludhiana and Moga (three each), Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar and Sangrur (two each) and Faridkot, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Ropar, Tarn Taran and Amritsar (one each).
