Bathinda, December 4

Farmers in the Malwa region are perturbed these days as frequent and prolonged power cuts amid the wheat sowing season have been keeping their fields dry. As power supply to tube wells in the fields remains suspended for hours, irrigation of freshly sown wheat crop is getting disrupted.

Baldev Singh, a farmer from Mehma Sawai village in Bathinda, said, "The Powercom has been applying cuts for over four hours. As a result, I am not able to irrigate wheat fields and a sizable chunk remains dry on a daily basis."

Harpal Singh Mann, another farmer, said, "Owing to prolonged power cuts, I have to stay awake during night to irrigate my fields because after a cut, we do not know when the supply will be restored. It's unfortunate that the government cannot ensure uninterrupted power supply to farmers even during the wheat sowing season."

As per Agriculture Department officials, after the sowing of wheat, irrigation and spray of fertilisers was important for the proper growth of the plant.

Jeevan Kansal, Chief Engineer, Powercom, Bathinda, said, "I am not authorised to comment on the matter. Higher officials at the Patiala head office can give information on it. Moreover, owing to maintenance work, planned power cuts are being applied by the department."
