Sangrur, December 4

The present crisis-like situation in farming has turned many rural women into 'all-rounders'. Earlier, they had confined themselves to cooking but these days, they are not only looking after household chores but also visiting fields with the help of their children while some women have also started patrolling their villages to prevent crime.

"In our village, many men have gone to Delhi to participate in the protest against the Central farm laws. Back home, only women along with their mother-in-laws are staying while in some houses, a few elderly men are present. We have formed a women brigade and are keeping in touch with each other," said Manjit Kaur, a woman from Balad Kalan village of Sangrur.

"Though cops are conducting regular patrolling and have promised us action if there is any problem, we are doing our own bit to contribute in the movement," said Gurmeet Kaur, another woman.

Amandeep Kaur, another woman from Bhawanigarh area, said, "Our day starts early as after finishing household chores, we help in the collection of fodder for animals from fields while some women are also taking care of wheat crop with their children. Farming is in our blood and we do not need any teaching for it," she said. — TNS
