Abohar, December 12

Four persons were killed and 18 were injured as a pickup van that was ferrying farm workers from Ladhuka, Fazilka, to Panjkosi to pluck kinnow in some orchards turned turtle today. The driver tried to prevent collision with a biker and lost control near Danewala Satkosi village, 20 km from here.

PPCC chief Sunil Jakhar's nephew, Sandeep Jakhar, who was coming from Panjkosi to Abohar, contacted Senior Medical Officer Dr Gagandeep Singh and arranged for the ambulance to shift the victims to the Civil Hospital. Even when the Indian Medical Association had given a countrywide call for strike against the Centre, SMO Dr Gagandeep, orthopedician Dr Sanman Mazi and Dr Pulkit Thatai, Dr Sahib Ram and Dr Sonima were present in the emergency ward to attend to the victims along with paramedics.

Doctors declared Prakash Kaur (34), Santo Bai (31), Sukhwinder Kaur (40) and Kala Singh (35) dead.

Chhinderpal Singh, Sheela Rani, Rachhpal Singh, Kajal, Shanti, Mukhtiar Singh, Shinderpal and Manjit Singh, who were critically injured, were referred to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College Hospital, Faridkot. Karmo Bai, Sumitra Bai, Praveen, Feroz Singh, Suman, Kulwant, Sunita, Balbir Kaur, Amarjit and Satya Rani were responding to treatment, doctors said.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Jaspal Singh Brar said free treatment would be provided to all. "We are submitting a report to the Deputy Commissioner, so that people killed and seriously injured in the accident can get financial assistance," he said.

Jakhar said he would take up the matter with Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

Legislator Arun Narang also visited the hospital and urged the government to release Rs 5 lakh as assistance to the next of kin of the deceased.
